Menopause weight gain is one of those stages that most women are afraid of. This is because weight gain during menopausal does not only indicate that they are indeed aging but also means that they cannot really control the drastic changes that their body will go through.

But, women should not sulk into the great pit of depression once they start to gain weight during symptoms of menopause because this does not mean that they are not doing something for themselves. They should realize that as people—especially women—age, their bodies will not have the same function as it did ten years ago. They should realize that this weight gain caused by menopausal is really inevitable.

Once they have accepted this fact, it will be easier for them to get out of the depression and start thinking of ways that can help them minimize the gaining of weight. Experts say that weight gain is one of the common problems women in their midlife stages—those who are in their 40s and 50s—complain about. Complaints include gains in the abdomen, hips, thighs, and inability to wear clothes that used to fit previously.

Although there is nothing much that can be done once weight gain in menopausal stage rushes in, there are some things that can be done to minimize and totally prevent it while you are younger.

What causes weight gain in menopause?

To be able to avoid suffering from too much weight gain caused by first signs of menopause, one of the things that younger women should do is to understand what the reasons behind this weight gain are.

Once they were able to discover and understand these causes, they can do something about it.

The following are just some of the common reasons that causes weight gain. Younger women should be very well aware of these causes so they can plan some ways to avoid gaining weight too much:

1. Less exercise. This is the considered as the number one reason why more and more women experience menopause weight gain. Studies show that as women age, they tend to move slower that is why they keep on accumulating fats on specific areas of their bodies. To avoid menopausal weight gain, younger women or even those who are in the border line can start increasing their physical activities by having regular sets of daily exercise and workout that is specially designed for them.

2. Increased food intake. This may include why women tend to put on excess weight during the menopausal stage. Experts say that as women grow older, their appetite increases which leads to the accumulation of too much calories which later on becomes fat since they are not able to burn it right away.

3. Inability to burn lesser amounts calories. Studies show that this is also a great factor that contributes to menopause weight gain since it replaces fat with calories which are harder to burn. As fat begin to replace muscles in the body, metabolism will run slower resulting in fat deposits on the body.

The Signs Of Menopause

It has been estimated that the average menopause age in the Western world is 51 years.  The typical age range for the first first signs of menopause is between the ages of 45 and 55.  If the last period occurs between the ages of 55 to 60 this is known as a “late menopause”. When a woman experiences “Early menopause” this is when the final period occurs between the ages of 45 to 50.  The word menopause literally means the cessation of monthly cycles or menstrual cycles, from the Greek roots meno (month) and pausis (a halt).

Once the first symptoms of menopause start to occur the periods are usually very erratic and it can take several months or years of this type of cycling to completely cease.  This makes pegging down an actually menopause age difficult.

The years leading up to the last period ever is referred to as premenopause. This describes the menopause age when the levels of reproductive hormones are already becoming lower and more erratic, and the signs of menopause and hormone withdrawal may be present.

The time that follows the point when a woman’s ovaries become inactive is called postmenopause.  This menopause age or stage takes place after a woman’s last period ever and most signs of menopause seem to have subsided.

The time leading up to the last monthly cycle ever is referred to as premenopause. This describes the menopause age when the levels of reproductive hormones have started to decrease and the periods have started to become irregular, and the signs of menopause and hormone withdrawal may have begun.

All women will experience the signs of menopause or effects of perimenopause.  However, not every woman will realize these signs at the same levels.  As the body senses the rapidly changing levels of natural hormones one or more of these signs will become apparent and will vary from person to person.

As a women is well into her menopause age she will commonly experience such signs of menopause as vainal atrophy, skin drying, hot flashes and mood changes.  A lack of energy is also a common symptom described by both users and non-users of hormone replacement therapy. Some psychological effects such as depression, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, memory problems and lack of concentration can be experienced as well.  Most of these signs of menopause will usually stop or improve significantly once the menopause age has been completed.

Experiencing these signs of menopause are a common transition in the life of a female that is very natural, it is not an illness, disease or mental disorder. This can be a challenge for some women, but for others it may not be as difficult, but all will experience some signs of menopause.
