The Short And Long Term Consequences Of Stress
Sunday, October 9th, 2011Many people today find themselves experiencing stress -from their jobs, families, traffic, financial problems, etc. Stress is not just a harmless byproduct of modern life, though; it can cause real harm if it’s not managed. If we better understand the major effects of stress, hopefully we’ll be motivated to take it seriously.
The reason there is so much heart disease, along with elevated cholesterol, and high blood pressure, can be definitely attributed to the amount of stress in people’s lives. Do you have high blood pressure, or a racing heart, then you are probably under way to much stress. Being under stress for too long can eventually give you heart problems, because it will cause the hardening of your arteries. Stress should never be taken for granted as a necessary part of life, but should be gotten rid of as much as any disease. Stress is harmful to your health, so you need to learn how to deal with it, because the effects can become life-threatening if allowed to accumulate over time. In most cases, stress is unwanted and potentially dangerous. Yet, a certain amount of stress is actually desirable and necessary. This explains why people sometimes like things like fast cars, scary movies and high risk sports. What such activities have in common, though, is that people seek them out and define them as exciting. When we have no say in the matter, it feels more like stress, which is a clue that stress is closely related to feelings of being out of control. It’s sometimes possible to focus on what’s stimulating about a stressful situation to transform it into a feeling of excitement.
A stressed out person and a moving vehicle can be a deadly combination. What is road rage but an extreme form of stress? Many events that occur on the road have the potential to cause stress if you let them -people driving too fast (or too slow), missing lights, traffic jams, construction delays, etc. A driver who is stressed out is putting himself at risk for speeding tickets, altercations with other drivers and accidents, not to mention high blood pressure and other health problems.
You will want to find ways to cope with stress when you realize all of the consequences that can be caused by stressful situations. There are many different health problems that all stem from stress, and that is the main reason most people go to the doctor. The good news is that life can be happier and healthier as long as ways can be found to lessen the stress.
